Zostavax (Shingles Vaccine)Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. If you were ever exposed to chicken pox, the virus may reappear in the form of shingles. Herpes zoster, the virus that causes shingles, lies dormant in our bodies for many years before "reawakening" and causing a painful skin rash. However severe pain can continue long after the rash has subsided. Our risk for developing shingles increase as we age. It is most common in adults aged 50 and older.
The vaccine to prevent shingles (trade name: Zostavax) can greatly reduce your chances of suffering from this painful rash and its after effects. The shingles vaccine REQUIRES A PRESCRIPTION FROM YOUR DOCTOR. Talk to your doctor. Most patients over age 50 are candidates to receive the vaccine. Foster's team of vaccinating pharmacists can administer the shingles vaccine. If you have a Medicare-D prescription plan, chances are the vaccine is covered by your plan. We can bill other prescription insurance plan to determine if the vaccine is covered for you. Call any of our locations for information on how you can get the shingles vaccine. |
